Being an entrepreneur and starting a new business can be very hectic and confusing. One of the best ways to keep yourself and your thoughts organized is the “to do” list. To do lists benefit almost everyone, from housewife to multi-million-dollar business owners, by helping you see a mental list of what you have accomplished, and what is still left to do. And let’s face it, nothing feels better than checking off those entries one by one. So, what is the secret to the Entrepreneur’s To-Do List? Our next two articles will take a look.
Keep It Simple
Forbes makes the point that a to-do list should be simple. They feel that your to-do list should not have over three things on it per day. There are even many successful people who only allow one thing on their daily to-do list. This helps keep you focused on what is important. “If you could only do one thing today to move your business forward, what would that thing be?” This needs to be the first thing on your to-do list. Forbes also suggests that the daily to-do list should be written the night before. Life Hack calls this “making a plan…”
Make a Plan
According to Life Hack, it is important that the entrepreneur makes a plan each and every day. A quote from Alexandra Mayzler from Thinking Caps Tutoring says, “Before starting on the work of the day, I create an action plan. I list everything that I need to accomplish and review the list along with scheduled meetings. By going over the plans for the day, I am prepared to complete all the tasks on my to-do list.” So, in a sense, your daily plan is your to-do list for the day.
Know the Numbers
As Works for Business points out, any entreprenuer who is hoping to branch out into his or her own startup needs to know the number; and not just those for his or her business, but for the competitions’ as well. Since the language of almost any business is numbers, you will have to learn to know this language as if it were your native tongue. Say you aren’t a math person? In order to be successful in business, you need to at least learn the basics. You can hire an accountant for the important numbers of your business workings, but you need to know things such as:
– What is the size of your target market?
– How many companies are competing for the same target audience?
– What kind of revenues and profits are the competition bringing in?
