The idea of becoming an entrepreneur is not a new one. People have been breaking out of the 9 to 5 grind to start their own businesses for longer than there has been a grind to break away from. Although the thought of leaving the security of a 9 to 5 job can be dauntingly frightening, more and more men and women are choosing to take that path. In the next 2 articles, we will look at the reasons that so many are choosing entrepreneurship over the convenience of working for someone else.
- They See a Need in the Market – One of the first requirements of being an entrepreneur is that your product or service meets a need in the market that is not being met. For those who see an empty spot that needs filling, working for someone else and just waiting for another person to see and fill that need is simply impossible. Entrepreneurs have the drive to see where a product or service is missing, and work to fill that void themselves. People like Steve Jobs cannot simply sit back and wait for someone else to do what is needed; these people are driven to see that the job is done as adequately as possible. Entrepreneurs can imagine a product or service that may not have ever existed before, understand why it is needed in the world today, and work to bring that idea to fruition.
- They Don’t Work Well with Others – Despite the fact that many may see this quality as a negative one, the fact is, many people simply cannot work well with others. Being closed up in an office or workplace and told to perform the same menial tasks, again and again, is enough to drive the entrepreneurial brain insane. An entrepreneur may be able to work well in a team setting where ideas are being bounced back and forth to achieve a common goal, but they usually do not work well in a setting where they are expected to think, act, and perform like all of the others around them.
- They Want to Be Their Own Boss – Ranked right up there with a lack of enthusiasm about being expected to perform the same mundane tasks as others around them is a lack of desire to work under anyone else. The entrepreneur wants to strike out on his or her own, to be a leader, not a follower, to blaze a path and be in charge. Entrepreneurs do not want to waste time waiting around for instructions but want to be the one dictating what needs to be done. This need to be one’s own boss has led many men and women to take on entrepreneurship instead of working for someone else’s company.
There are several other reasons that so many men and women are choosing to become entrepreneurs. In our next article, we will look at a few more.
